Local building contractors have noted an uptick in work after a long dry spell. But they’ve got competition from Pennsylvania.

“If you’re a company that’s involved in building, you want a foothold with the Amish in Lancaster County,” said Gerry Thorpe, owner of Bayhorse Gazebo and Barns in Pine Plains. He sells sheds, garages, pavilions, gazebos, even modular houses, all either pre-made by the Amish or built by them on-site.
